Basic lighting techniques

We had a studio session with Andy where he demonstrated several different portrait lighting techniques, with our lovey model Ryan! Examples of each technique are shown below, along with a wider shot of the lighting setup.

this image has the light coming from a 45/45 degree angle with a reflector on the left, it creates a pleasing light and is quite flattering.

this is one softbox from the top and 2 reflectors on either side of ryans face, it creats a very even light, very nice and flattering to the skin

this shot is lit from above, with 2 light subtractors to either side of ryans face. it creates harsh shadows underneath the eyes and is very dramatic

this is lit from above with a softbox, with 2 subtractors to the sides and a gold reflector directly underneath ryans face, creating a lovely golden glow and very even light all over.

again, lit from above with a softbox, subtractors to the sides, reflector beneath his face with an additional light behind him to illuminate the background. a much more 'professional' looking image, much higher key than the previous ones and very nice to look at.

this one is lit entirely from above and completely naturally with a large skylight flooding daylight in. it has cast a few small shadows on his face that a reflector beneath would get rid of but it is still very nice and diffused.
